Please visit www.ada.org for overviews of any of the procedures we offer or on advice regarding conditions we have not specifically listed. Some situations and conditions that we discuss frequently and may be of interest to you are: Dry Mouth Syndrome Antibiotics and Your Heart (Current Pre-Medication Guidelines) Digital X-ray Our office uses digital radiography (digital x-ray) which captures and stores the digital image on a computer. This image can be enlarged which makes it easier for the dentist and dental hygienist to detect problems. Digital x-rays reduce radiation 80-90% compared to the exposure of traditional x-rays. Dental x-rays are essential, preventative, diagnostic tools that provide valuable information not visible during a regular dental exam. Dentists and dental hygienists use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities and complete an accurate treatment plan. Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Inhalation Sedation) (Laughing Gas) Inhalation sedation is very safe and has very few side effects. The combination of nitrous and oxygen have no ill effects on the brain, kidneys, liver, lungs or heart. It has been found to be very effective in relaxing the patient within 2 or 3 minutes after onset of administration. There's no "hangover" effect-the gas is eliminated from the body within 3 to 5 minutes after the gas supply has been stopped. The gas is completely reversible by the administration of oxygen. Patients can safely drive home and do not require an escort. The gas also has pain killing properties and can be used on young children for anesthetic purposes. For our adult patients, it may be possible to use nitrous instead of local anesthetic when non invasive gum procedures need to be performed (such as a deep cleaning). It also is proven to be effective in eliminating or at least Types of Dental Fillings Several dental filling materials are available in our office. At Kirkpatrick Dental we offer both the silver colored (amalgam) filling and the tooth colored (composite) filling. The best filling for you will depend on the location and extent of the cavity, the cost of the material, your insurance coverage and Dr. Kirkpatrick's recommendation for you. Tooth Whitening (Bleaching) With the bleach system we use (Lifelike) you will be able to whiten your teeth at home with the custom fitted trays and solution obtained from our office. Although weak bleaching solutions can be purchased in pharmacies, online, and in grocery stores, the results cannot compare to our system which can only be dispensed by a licensed dentist. As with all dental treatments, the dentist or dental auxiliaries should supervise the bleaching process. Research and clinical studies indicate that white carbamide peroxide under the supervision of a dentist is safe for the teeth and gums. In fact, many dentist consider this process the safest cosmetic dental procedure available today. The "take home tray method" we offer gives you, the patient, ultimate control over your whitening. It is safer, causes less sensitivity, and is more cost effective than some of the one time, in office procedures offered. A dental implant is a titanium (prosthetic) root placed into the jaw to hold a crown, bridge, or denture in place. This type of treatment can be more conservative than the traditional bridge because the implant stands alone and does not require neighboring teeth to be worked on. They are very natural looking and feeling and are considered the best solution for missing teeth. Here at Kirkpatrick Dental, implants are our specialty. We have done hundreds to date and take pride in our expertise. Benefits include: Reliability: They have a very high success rate and are considered a superior option for tooth replacement. Comfort: Dental implants will let you eat and speak with immeasurable confidence and comfort. They are very secure (like your natural teeth) and offer the patient freedom from loose, uncomfortable, clicking dentures and partials. Tooth Saving: The dental implant does not require other teeth next to the missing tooth to be worked on in order to fill the space of the missing tooth or teeth. Your natural teeth are not altered like they are for traditional bridges; therefore, this procedure offers significant long term benefits to your overall dental health. Veneers (Empress) (Lava) A veneer is a thin, custom fabricated layer of strong porcelain type materials placed on the front and biting surface of a tooth. The lab made veneers can alter tooth color, size, position and shape. The placement of veneers is an irreversible process because the process requires minimal tooth reduction to accommodate the thickness of the veneer. Our empress or lava veneers will give you the beautiful smile and confidence you deserve.
